Installation Instructions

Commonwealth Stoneworks (CWSW) holds must be installed only by qualified and competent personnel.

Inspect each climbing hold before mounting. A hold suspected of damage should not be used in any circumstance. Contact CWSW if damage is evident or if you have questions about installation.

CWSW holds are made of stone. As when climbing outdoors, the risk of stone breakage is low but always present. For the safety of belayers, CWSW holds are intended strictly for use as boulder features. To mitigate risk due to breakage, do not install CWSW holds in a top-rope or lead-climb route.

Necessary Hardware

CWSW climbing holds are available in bolt-on and screw-on configurations:
  • Bolt-on holds must be installed with a 3/8”-16 caphead bolt that protrudes at least one inch from the back of the hold. Bolt-on holds additionally have at least one screw location sized for a #8 countersunk construction screw - the screw threads must engage the full thickness of the mounting substrate when installed.
  • Screw-on holds have at least two screw locations, each sized for a #8 countersunk construction screw - the screw threads must engage the full thickness of the mounting substrate when installed.

      Handling and Installation

      • Do not drop CWSW holds on a hard surface or store under heavy loads.
      • Hardware used to install CWSW holds must be torqued firmly but not excessively. Installation torque for bolted and screwed connections must not exceed 30 ft-lb.
      • Ensure that all hardware locations are affixed with appropriate hardware.
      • After installation, ensure the hold is rigidly attached to the mounting substrate and remains free of damage; inspect the hold regularly when in use.
      • CWSW holds may be safely cleaned with soap and water. Solvents will damage the holds’ metal washer attachment and must not be used as a cleaning agent.
